Mirtogenol
A study was held on a new medication called Mirtogenol in University of Chieti-Pescara in San Valentino,Italy.This study is the first of its kind because it shows that natural food supplements can reduce the likelihood of developing glaucoma. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the united state in which there is more than 2.22 million U.S. citizens have glaucoma and on 2020 it was estimated to increase by 50 percent to 3.6 million in 2020. What is Mirtogenol?Mirtogenol is a combination of standardized bilberry extract (from fresh fruit of Vaccinium myrtillus) which is called Mirtoselect and French maritime pine bark extract which is called Pycnogenol.Mirtoselect contains high amount of anthocyanins which is a powerful antioxidants and has many benefits on human health like in cancer, aging, diabetes mellitus and inflammation while Pycnogenol contains procyanidins, bioflavonoids and organic acids. Procyanidins are powerful antioxidants that can help to protect against the effects of environmental stresses like cigarette smoking and also they will help to support normal body metabolic processes by decreasing blood fat especially cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, decreasing thrombus formation by improving blood viscosity and preventing atherosclerosis Its role in reduction of IntraocularPressureIn this study, Mirtogenol was used as tablets not as an eye drops, twice a day for 6 months on 28 patients. Each tablet has 80mg of Mirtoselect and 40mg of Pycnogenol. At the end of the study, the IOP decreased from 26 mmHG to 22 mmHG.One theory on how optic nerve is damaged by high intraocular pressure is ischemic theory in which there is decrease in the blood flow to the optic nerve which makes this nerve susceptible to the damage induced by the high intraocular pressure. Investigations on the intraocular blood flow by color Doppler imaging found that this medication improves intraocular blood flow through retinal and ciliary capillaries. Pycnogenol which is a component of it was found to increase the production of endothelial nitrous oxide which will help to dilute blood vessel and increase blood flow through them .With this medication the intraocular blood flow will be improved, making the optic nerve less susceptible to high intraocular pressure. This medication also helps to reduce intra-ocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humor from ciliary body and also by improving the function of ciliary body. Another study was made by using a combination of it and latanoprost and showed that it was safe to use both combination and this combination will aid to further normalize ocular pressure. Other BenefitsOther studies were held in both gradients separately and showed that they might be helpful in patients with diabetic retinopathy.Mirtoselect was found to have benefits on retinal capillaries and decrease the permeability and leakage plasma through them and was found to reduce the incidence of retinal micro hemorrhages. Pycnogenol was found also to reduce retinal micro-hemorrhages and capillary leakage in diabetic retinopathy. It has these actions by reducing plasma endothelin-1 and by enhancing the activity of nitrous oxide.
