There are measurements which we can do for dry eyes treatment and these measurements can be taken to control dry eye symptoms and prevent any further damage to the cornea.

Dry eyes treatment can involve one or more of following steps, depending on the severity.

1- Treatments for Eyelid Problem

In case you have blepharitis you should treat it. Also in cases of entropion, ectropion or other eyelid problems, surgery maybe indicated.

One of the most common surgeries used is Tarsorrhaphy which will be used for Patient who can not completely close his or her eyelid. Stitches are placed on the corners of the eyelid opening (called the palpebral fissure) to narrow this space. This will allow to less evaporation and more lubrication.

2- Dry eye moisturizers such as Dry eye drops, gel and ointment.

This is the the most common way for dry eyes treatment.Most of them are used to replace aqueous layer deficiency and to provide moisture and lubrication for the surface of cornea.Those Eye drops can be used as often as you needed.

There are many types of these eye drops. Your doctor will suggest which type can be best for you according to your severity. It will be better to have tear substitutes without preservatives which can be harmful to your corneal epithelial cells.

Autologous serum can be used for certain patients and it can give a relief for severe dry eyes. Ointments and gels can be used at bedtime because they are thicker than drops and they can cause blurring of vision during the day.

3- Mucolytic Agents

They can be used to treat mucous plaques or filaments. The most common used mucolytic agent is acetylcysteine.

4- Corticosteroid Eye Drops

These eye drops can be used to decrease the symptoms of red eye and itching but it should not when there are epithelial erosions because it will affect the healing of these cells and also it should not be used for a long period of time. So it is better to use this medication under the supervision of your doctor.

5- Punctal Occlusion

Tears are drained from your eye through a small hole presents in the upper and lower eyelid near the inner corner. This hole is called punctum which is connected through ducts to the nose.

Punctal occlusion will reduce the amount of tear drainage so there will be much of your natural tears preserved. Plug which is made of collagen can be dissolved by its own after a few weeks and it is used for temporary occlusions.

Another type of dry eye plugs made of silicon and they are used for long period or for permanent occlusion.

Another way of permanent occlusion is using of thermal cautery to occlude the punctum.

6- Antibiotics

Oral antibiotics like tetracycline can be used to in case of meibomian gland dysfunction.

7- Bandage Contact Lens

There are special types of contact lenses which can be called bandage contact lens and they are the best contacts for dry eyes.

These lenses can be used in severe disease to protect the cornea from erosions and to improve the delivery of oxygen to cornea.

8- Cyclosporine Eye Drops

In severe cases we can use immunosuppressant eye drop called cyclosporin.

This drug will suppress the inflammation in conjunctiva and cornea which will lead to increase goblet cells and so increase teat production. The brand name of this drug is Restasis.

It is the only eye drop that is approved by FDA to be used to increase tear production.

9- Oral Dry Eye Medication

CF101 is a new oral medication that is under phase 3 clinical trial for treatment of moderate to severe dry eyes.
