Femtosecond cataract surgery

Femtosecond-pulse lasers are similar to those used for LASIK but Femtosecond laser used in cataract surgery differs from the traditional method of lasik in a number of ways. It uses near infrared light to create subsurface cuts (can reach deeper into the eye up to 7,500 μm in depth) instead of that used in lasik which use ultraviolet light sources called excimer laser which can’t penetrate deep than the cornea (not more than 1,200 μm in depth). In addition, femtosecond pulses are shorter, which allows lower power and less collateral damage.. For more information about femtosecond cataract surgery, click here

Laser for anterior capsulorhexis

Cataract is an opacification in natural lens. Natural lens presents inside a bag which has anterior and posterior surface.

During cataract surgery, the eye doctor should remove the anterior surface of the bag to reach the cataract. Capsulorhexis is a manual removal of the anterior part of the bag. It has some complications like extension of the capsulorhexis to the posterior surface leading rupture of the whole bag and the cataract can be dropped to the back of the eye.

LensAR, Inc. company announced that they received clearance from the FDA for use of the LensAR Laser System for anterior capsulorhexis instead of the traditional manual capsulotomy during cataract surgery.

This new technique can improve the surgical outcome of cataract surgery outcomes.

This is a video of the traditional manual anterior capsulorhexis.

The anterior capsule is transparent membrane, and to make it visible for the eye surgery, they will use special stain that will stain the anterior capsule with blue color.

You can see that anterior capsulorhexis need experienced doctor to minimise complication.

The cataract is the white tissue behind the anterior capsule

With LensAR Laser System, your eye doctor will use laser instead of forceps

Diagnosis of Alzheimer can be made through an eye exam

Researchers from Alzheimer’s disease Center and Molecular Aging and Development Laboratory, Boston University, U.S., found that protein amyloid-beta which form plaques in the brain of the patient with Alzheimer disease can be found also in the cataract lens.

This study was made on patients with Down syndrome who will develop Alzheimer disease early in 30s, also they will develop cataract.

By developing a new eye scanner to detect this protein, doctors can diagnose Alzheimer disease early.
