A 52- Response from Online Eye Info/Are Orthokeratology Contact lenses Safe?

by Online Eye Info

Thanks for your Question.

In the FDA clinical study for Orthokeratology Contact lenses, they found that more than 65% of patients achieved vision of 20/20 and around 90% achieved vision of 20/40.

Study author Dennis S.C. Lam, FRCS, FRCOphth, chairman and professor
Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said, "The general public must be aware that overnight OKL wear may be associated with very serious and visually significant
complications."

They found that it can increase the risk of corneal infection such as Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Keratitis and Acanthamoeba Keratitis.

It can cause that by:

1- Overnight wearing of the them can deprive the corneas of
oxygen.

2- compressive forces to be exerted on the corneal epithelium resulting in local trauma and thinning.

Other than that it can be much expensive than regular contact lenses.

You need to consider this option carefully and you should discuss this option with your eye doctor.

A 52- Are Orthokeratology Safe?

by Dr. Robert Gerowitz, Optometrist-Orthokeratologist

Hi,
Multiple studies from around the world; LORIC (Dr. Pauline Cho, Hong Kong),COOKI (Dr. Jeff Walline, US), SMART (Eiden et al, US) and Dr. Mark Bullimore's Ohio State research have all shown Ortho-k to be not only effective at preventing Progressive Myopia in children but also no more risky to wear than anyother contact lens modality for all age groups.

The information out of China that had been quoted here is from early in the last decade and was the isolated result of previously unregulated, unmonitored, and improperly used Ortho-k designs. Currently, China is undergoing an "Ortho-k Renaissance" and doctors there are getting the training they need to keep Ortho-k the safe treatment it is around the world.
