Q 18 - Eyelid edema for over 4 months

Hi,
I had glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy) on November 1, 2010. The eye was leaking and they did a "repair" on the eye by doing a Bleb revision with Mitomycin-C conjugal advancement, tissue glue and amniotic membrane in the right eye then a day after surgery I developed eyelid edema and in the right upper and lower lids. I had gone to an allergist, an eyelid doctor, two ophthalmologists which includes the one that did the surgery and non of them have every seen this happen and don't know how to fix it. I have used FML steroid cream, antibiotics, Vigamox drops and the best that I have 4 months later is that the eye has opened about 1/3 at an agle and the lower eyelid is still swollen. I look disfigured and I am very depressed about it! Have you ever seen or heard of this happening? And if so have you heard of what I can do to fix it. I am desperate!

Most likely you have allergy. It can be allergy to medications,amniotic membrane, tissue glue or stitch. You might need to ask your doctor to change your medications to alternatives and use a potent anti-allergic medications such as antihistamine or steroid. These changes should be done under his supervision.

Another common cause is sinusitis which can be associated with eyelid swelling. Sinusitis can be diagnosed by X-ray and CT scan of the orbit and skull. Treatment of sinusitis can be with systemic antibiotics, topical antibiotics are less effective.

It seems that your condition is improving and the swelling is getting less but in a slow manner. This is a good sign.

Hi,

I have already gone to an allergist and I am not allergic to those things and we had tried all your suggestions. I am now at the antibiotic stage (taking Augmentin) and that is hat opened the eye to about a third of the way. My next step is an Infectious Disease doctor to see what he can offer to this puzzle.
